CHAPTER THIRTEEN

ERIN

Allen is bobbing and weaving between Francis and me. It’s not overly hot today, but he’s sweating up a storm, and with good reason.

Today the King and Queen are touring the zoo.

Allen pauses in front of us. “The elephants have been fed?”

I nod.

“Alexander has his favorite toy?”

“Yes,” replies Francis with a hint of irritation. “Everything is ready. Don’t worry.”

Allen spins in a circle, hands on his hips. “If only it were that easy.”

In any other circumstance you’d say, ‘No, seriously, don’t worry. It’s not like the Queen’s coming to visit,’ but… well, she is, isn’t she? Not the Queen, like corgi lover, but a queen of pretty reputable standing who could easily dismiss us with a wave of her perfectly manicured fingers.

Allen stops and cups his ear. “My god. That’s them. They’re coming.” He claps his hands together. “Places.”

I’m trying not to laugh. Maybe it’s the steamy beach sex that has me so mellow, that residual pleasure continuing to pump my brain full of cotton candy emotions.

Even Francis seems to have picked up on my overly calm composure. She leans over to me. “You’re not stoned or something, are you?”

“Natural high,” I smile back, fast realizing that’s probably not the best answer in this circumstance.

She rolls her eyes, putting her hands behind her back and straightening up beside me. “Just don’t offer a joint to Her Royal Highness, yeah?”

I’m not even going to grace that with a reply.

A trumpet sounds, the King and Queen announced. Again, I stifle laughter at the absurdity of it all.

The procession arrives up the path, the King and Queen leading followed by a large group of staff and security, the four princes at the rear chortling and smiling. Once they’re closer, Eden winks at me.

I wink back, one of the security guards raising an eyebrow thinking it’s his lucky day.

Not you, buddy. I’ve only got eyes for one… uh, four men.

The King’s looking decidedly more casual today as he takes Allen’s hand and a moment to discuss the zoo. The Queen continues onto Francis and me, but the nerves I felt at our first meeting are gone. I smile and curtsy. She stops and smiles back. Read: a light crease at the corners of her mouth. There’s no inquisition or ‘How was Eden last night? I do hope he pleasured you well.’

Oh, yes, Your Royal Highness. Yes. Yes. Yes.

Poor Allen is tasked with leading the royal couple around the enclosures, Francis and I slipping back to the rear of the procession with the princes.

We stop at the elephant enclosure, Alexander letting off a loud trumpet to show his displeasure at being disturbed this early in the morning.

“He’s a loud one, isn’t he?”

I shiver at the sound of Eden’s voice so close. He’s standing behind me and I swear I can feel the heat of his body even in the shade.

Everyone else is focused on the King and Queen or quietly in conversation. No one notices Eden and me at the periphery, not even Francis, who’s busy ogling Kristian from the other side.
